E.
coli is
the abbreviated name of the bacterium Escherichia coli
is one of the most abundant microorganisms in Human intestines.
According
to the definitive text, which categorizes bacteria,
Bergey's Manual, E. coli belongs to the gram
negative gamma subgroup (as H.
influenzae and S.
oneidensis) Enterobacteriales (after Greek's
word enterikos - intestine), genus XIII Escherichia.
The name Escherichia comes from the name of
T. Escherich, who in 1885 first isolated and characterized
E. coli. E. coli is constantly on the news because
of multiple cases of contamination with it, which causes life-threatening
disease in infants and children. For years E. coli serves
both as one of the most favorite model organisms and one of the
most valuable research tools for the biomedical community. Nobel
Price Winner J. Mono once wrote that "Once we understand
the biology of Escherichia coli, we will understand the
biology of an elephant".
We
are still not there...
